IN group one of the Pretoria Cup of the Okehampton and district table tennis league this week Okehampton C beat Okehampton College B 6-1. Naomi Wilkins did well to beat Maureen Venton to win the one for the college 19-21, 20-22. Gill Edwards and Dick Randell won all their games for the C side. In the next match Bridestowe were at home to Okehampton C. Maureen saved the whitewash this time for Okehampton C by beating Mark Fogerty in the last singles. Bridestowe won the match 6-1. Francis Griffiths and Phil Down won their singles and the doubles. In the final group one match Okehampton College B played Bridestowe with both teams only having two players available; this meant they could only play four singles and one double. In an exciting and hard fought match all the singles went to a third leg decider. John Howick was the star for the college wining both his singles against Mark Fogerty and Phil Down; the decider was the doubles which Mark and Phil won to give Bridestowe a 3-2 win. In group two Okehampton College raced into a 4-0 lead against Tavistock B before Lorraine Robinson beat the college's Jeremy Bristow in straight sets; the college however won the last two singles for a 6-1 win. Okehampton College have already won this group and the last match to decide second place is between Tavistock B and Lewdown. In group three Okehampton B were at home to Moretonhampstead A and raced into a 4-0 lead; the two players of Moretonhampstead A were no match for the division one side. Andy Moppett and Karen Stephenson both won their two singles and Peter Richardson just beat Claire Yallop 22-20, 22-20. Claire just lost to Karen in the third leg; Ken Underhill saved the whitewash beating Peter Richardson in straight sets. Ken and Claire won the doubles against Peter and Karen in three legs with Okehampton B winning the match 5-2. In the next match Moretonhampstead were at home to the division one winner Tavistock A. Fred Phillips and Roger Bowkett were unbeaten in their two singles but Claire Yallop and Ken Underhill did well to beat Peter Hicks, who found the handicap hard to overcome. With the score 3-2, Roger beat Claire to put the match 4-2 to Tavistock; Ken and Claire won the doubles against Fred and Roger to make the score 4-3 to Tavistock, for a very hard fought and enjoyable match. The two division one teams go through to the quarter finals.
