HERE we go again with traffic management and 'management' in general in Okehampton. When are the councils going to realise that you don't need any expertise – you need someone with common sense. Look at what has happened in the past. They have made wider pavements for pedestrians but they have driven the pedestrians away. If you have a coach in the bus stop and a delivery lorry or van outside of Boots, Fore Street is at a standstill. Because of bad planning, three supermarkets trade within spitting distance of each other. The traffic lights in Market Street were supposed to work in tandem with one another. Again, bad planning. Dog fouling at Simmons Park is another issue. Surely the easiest way to stop it would be to stop all dogs unless on a leash in the park. Owners drive them out there now in their cars, so why not take them up on to the moors instead? You would certainly upset a lot less people. Traffic along Mill Road breaking the speed limit. Along this and other roads, house owners have complained to police about the speed, but what's happened? Nothing. Another bad move. The coach bays in Mill Road Car Park. The best bit of planning of all was getting rid of the toilets — what is the first thing coach passengers look for when they get off? I think a lot of our 'experts' and councillors need to look in a mirror and think, 'Am I doing a good job or am I like a lot of politicians and I don't know what I am doing?' Over the years I have seen a lot of changes in the town which have been a complete waste of time and tax payers' money and it's still going on. I feel very sorry for the traders in the town who try very hard to make a living. All the experts put up hurdles for them to climb over. What about parking on pavements all over the town, the derelict sites in Mill Road which have been vacant for years? I could go on and on but what's the point? Name and address supplied JUST one thing to say relating to the roads in Okehampton, featured in the Times, February 12 edition. I totally agree with Cllr Derek Webber — whoever allowed three supermarkets in one area and two schools taking the same route has to take the blame for the traffic situation that now is commonplace in Okehampton and can only get worse as the number of new properties continue to grow. Cloud cuckoo land is a very mild comment in my opinion. Pat Buchan Okehampton I'M prompted to write regarding Okehampton's traffic problems. It all started years ago when a perfectly good car, lorry and coach park was taken up with yet another supermarket. Then the roads here and there were narrowed. The stupid bit of no entry at the bottom of Northfield Road takes the biscuit as 99.9% of the traffic still goes through it. That's an accident waiting to happen. We live at Maceys Terrace, so an expedition to go shopping usually takes half an hour to actually shop, but can take up to an hour going and returning. Regarding the no entry sign, why can't a camera be fitted as we never see anyone policing our rules and when they do, no cars will go through then. My option would be to have a massive flyover for Okehampton. At least the locals could shop in peace and be able to get around safely. Mrs J Carpenter Okehampton
