OKEHAMPTON has a jam-packed day of entertainment to help the community overcome the foot and mouth crisis on August Bank Holiday Monday.

From Fore Street to Simmons Park, the town will be buzzing for the First Aid Music Day.

Get your flares ready because the day will have a distinctive sixties flavour with top acts from that era The Fortunes, Marmalade and the Swinging Blue Jeans performing in the park.

When farmers' favourite The Wurzels heard the event was part of the town regeneration programme in the wake of the foot and mouth crisis they were only to willing to come along.

Other acts include The London Community Gospel Choir and the English Symphony Orchestra who will be performing 'Last Night of the Proms' during the evening — which culminates in a huge fireworks display.

Organiser Susanne Watt is encouraging all the businesses to open on the day so they take full advantage of this event.

'We want to attract the visitors who are in the area for the Bank Holiday Weekend to Okehampton,' she said.

'Once they see how hospitable the town is and and what it has to offer they are sure to come back.

'We need to show that the town is alive and buzzing and I hope everybody joins in the spirit by dressing up in sixties style.'

Many restaurants including Cellars and The Dovecote will be open for breakfast before events kick-off at around 11am and the town streets will host a town crier competition, kids karaoke and many other activities and entertainments.

The range of on-site facilities at Simmons Park include a bar, catering, local crafts marquee and face painting.

Chamber of trade member Donald Rooke said everyone was really looking forward to the day: 'It's going to be brilliant — a lot of hard work has gone into this day and it will put Okehampton back on the map again.'
