GREAT food and swinging music await anyone who buys a ticket for a vibrant night out in support of Okehampton College.

Town mayor, Cllr Christine Marsh has chosen the college as her charity this year and is organising a major ?Musical Evening? in the Charter Hall on Friday, February 21.

Sumptuous food will be prepared by college students and the entertainment will feature Okehampton College Big Band and guest soloists.

?The college is seeking technology status and is looking for public involvement? said Cllr Marsh.

?I want to offer my support for all that they are doing there to make it happen. They are putting in a grant bid and it will be match funded,? she said.

Principal Chris Powell said Cllr Marsh had been a ?fantastic supporter? of the college and said everyone was ?really grateful? for all she had done.

He said the Music Evening was an opportunity for the people of Okehampton to come along and support the mayor?s efforts.

Mr Powell said the funds for the technology aspect had already been raised.

?The funds raised on the night will go towards supporting music in the college. This concert will showcase the talents of our students.?

The Big Band consists mainly of college students plus some former students and one or two teachers.

?If you haven?t heard the College Big Band you would think they were professional they are so good. All the guest performers are college students and we have some very talented musicians,? said Mr Powell.

He said the food that will be served will be prepared by students and staff.?

The college is developing a new technology block that will feature a catering kitchen which will be open in September.

?Places that have these are usually colleges of further education,? said Mr Powell.

Anyone who wants tickets for the Musical Evening ? which are £15 a head ? can get them from Donalds menswear shop in Fore Street or from the Okehampton Town Hall.
