THE idea of a big music festival to attract thousands into Tavistock was greeted enthusiastically at an initial meeting in the town recently.
Peter Jones, director of music with Stannary Brass Band, is the driving force behind the idea to stage the big event ? and to create a state-of-the-art music centre and recording studio at Tavistock College.
He said he was delighted with the turnout at the meeting, which was held in the town hall.
Mr Jones said: ?I was really very pleased indeed with the way it went.
?There were some very knowledgeable people there who want to take it on board ? and they are there, in our local community. I?m just pleased we are getting together.?
He said two committees are likely to be formed ? one to take on organisation of the festival, the other to consider a business plan for the music centre project.
It is envisaged that the festival would be held over several days, probably a weekend, and take in several sites, involving all sorts of music.
The music centre would be built at Tavistock College and be available for use by the school and the community.
Mr Jones said: ?The big thing at the meeting was really the festival ? the music centre is more a long term goal.?
He said there was a wide cross section of people at the meeting, which was ideal, as the festival ? and the music centre ? are intended to appeal to all ages and tastes.
?One guy was a professional festival organiser, there was another couple who had been involved in music studio design, there were people involved in jazz, there were three young people from the rock side of things, someone who does workshops at pre-schools ? they were from all areas of music,? said Mr Jones.
A further meeting is to be held next week at the Music Box office at the social services building in Abbey Rise.
