THE Tavonians Theatre Company will take to the stage in Tavistock Town Hall later this month, with its latest production, Terry Pratchett's Maskerade.
For the four day run between Wednesday November 24 and Saturday, November 27, the town hall will become the opera house in Ankh-Morpork, on Discworld.
Terry Pratchett's Discworld is inhabited by some rather unusual characters and the opera house has, of course, got its own resident ghost. Or could there possibly be more than one ghost? Only time will tell. It's not just the opera that's full of murder, music and mayhem, so it's lucky for everyone that Granny Weatherwax, Discworld's most famous witch, will be in the audience and she doesn't hold with that sort of thing. There will definitely be delights and a great deal of laughter going on, but the story doesn't end happily for everyone.
The Tavonians' cast of more than 20 includes many who are familiar to Tavistock audiences and they have been joined by several new and talented thespians.
Director Steph Reese said: 'It's an excellent cast and we've been having a great deal of fun in rehearsals, working on some of the, shall we say, odd, characters.
'Creating Discworld is quite a challenge, but the town hall has a perfect gothic character that adds to the atmosphere of the play.'
The Friday performance is the same day as Dickensian Evening, which provides an ideal opportunity for people to enjoy all that's going on around the town in the early evening, then finish off the evening at 8pm with a bit of escapism into another world. The organisers suggest it would be wise to allow a bit of extra time to find a parking space that day.
Tickets are £8.50 and are on sale at Bookstop, Pens & Moor and on The Tavonians' website at http://www.tavonians.org.uk">www.tavonians.org.uk
The Tavonians Theatre Company is currently celebrating 75 years of bringing theatre to the people in and around Tavistock, and has some exciting plans for the future, including a series of theatre skills workshops and open-air Shakespeare at Buckland Abbey next year.
