Carlsberg South Western League
Penzance 2
Tavistock 1
IT had been raining for most of the morning and there was a downpour prior to kick-off. But the officials declared the surface playable and right from the start when the ball stuck in the mud it was clear it would be farcical.
Tavistock had the better of the first half with Lee Beer sending in a cross that flashed past a post. He then set up John Gosling, but due to the conditions he failed to connect. On the stroke of half-time Wayne Crow saw his shot blocked and Lee Doncaster?s follow-up missed the target.
Andy Meeds tipped a shot over the bar at the start of the second half. Then on 57 minutes the Lambs went behind as Gavin Edwards and Dean Marks combined to leave Mark Vercesi in space to slide the ball under Meeds.
Minutes later, the same player was unlucky as his header went just over from a corner. The conditions again had a major part as a through-ball destined for the Penzance keeper held up in the mud for Paul Adcock to see his shot go past the post.
The Lambs brought on strikers Jeff Babb and Simon Parnell in an effort to get back on level terms but with 20 minutes left they found themselves two down.
They did not clear the ball out of defence and it came straight back for Marks to cross and Barry Pappin to slot home.
They got themselves a goal back with just five minutes remaining when Nathan Blamey crossed for Parnell to head home, but it was not enough for them and they conceded defeat for only the second time this season.
l The Lambs are in action today (Boxing Day) with an away game at near table top rivals Liskeard with a 2.30pm kick-off but the eagerly awaited match against champions St Blazey on Saturday 28th has been postponed due to their involvement in the Cornwall Senior Cup.
