THE MP for Central Devon recently visited Castle Drogo to see the progress of the renovation work being carried out on the historic building.

Ever work began on Drogo more than 100 years ago, it has stood exposed to the elements atop a hill in the Teign Valley. The National Trust property is currently undergoing a five year £11-million renovation project to save the castle from major structural problems caused by serious leaks and water penetration throughout the building.

During his visit Mr Stride scaled the scaffolding and was able to view the work from above the castle, whose roof has now been fully removed.

Mr Stride said: 'My visit today has been a great opportunity to see how well the renovations to the castle are coming along and to talk to the volunteers who keep it open for business all year round.

'I encourage everyone to visit this historic site — the fact that you can view the work in progress adds an additional interest to any visit.'

Pat Sawyer, a volunteer who showed Mr Stride around said: 'It's good to see Mel taking such a keen interest in the castle's history and our on-going work here with the National Trust. Castle Drogo is a historic Devon landmark and a great draw for tourists in the area.'

Work was originally completed on the castle in 1930, making it the last castle to be built in England. The estate, gardens, visitor centre and shop are open throughout the week year round. The castle is open at weekends over the winter period. For full details visit http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castle-drogo">www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castle-drogo or call 01647 433306.
