Cllr Marsh, who is also Okehampton?s county councillor, said using Oaklands Drive was the ?only option? that she could see for a relief road and she ?wholeheartedly? backed Mr Burnett?s call that Okehampton?s residents should get involved in the planning process.

Ian Bailey, chairman of Okehampton Chamber of Trade, said: ?We feel a relief road is a necessity if we are to keep the lifeblood of Okehampton flowing.

Mr Bailey thought use of Oaklands Drive was the only sensible solution.

?We are building houses on the eastern side of the town, we?ve put the shops in but we are not giving traffic access,? said Mr Bailey.

It was vital to have full consultation on any road improvements. ?That?s what open government is all about,? he said.
