MEMBERS of Tavistock Tree Preservation Group and Derriford Breast Cancer Support Group came together to celebrate the lives of two close friends.
The two groups planted a matching pair of Mountain Ash trees at the Alexander Centre, Tavistock, to commemorate the lives of Kirsten Sutherland, 1956 to 2007, and Alison Humberstone, 1952 to 2007.
Kirsten was secretary of the support group for ten years and Alison, a teacher at the Alexander Centre, was one of Tavistock's first tree wardens.
Brian Fyfield-Shayler, co-ordinator for the preservation group, said: 'During the last three decades, Plymouth Road has lost nearly all its mature trees.
'The most recent to be felled, at the end of 2007, was the magnificent Copper Beech in the garden of 44 Plymouth Road, fatally infected by fungal pathogens.
'After this sad loss, Georgina Browne, landscape officer at West Devon Borough Council, wrote to all householders in the road, urging the planting of new trees. The appeal, to re-green this major approach into the town, has so far met with only limited response.'
The Tree Preservation Group decided to lead the way in the council's appeal to re-green Plymouth Road, and hopes other groups and residents will follow its example.
The work was carried out by a team from the town council's work's department, supervised by Wayne Southall and Ken Sedgmen.
