DOING their bit to save the rainforest was a piece of cake for two Mount Kelly Prep youngsters.
Year 4 pupils Lewis Critchley and Joshua Bratt were inspired to fundraise to save part of the rainforest when they learned about the plight of children within the cocoa trade.
They were alarmed by the impact this trade and others had upon the destruction of the rainforest and its wildlife.
The boys researched the charities involved in preserving the rainforests and selected Rainforest Concern.
They presented to more than 300 pupils and staff details about the ever shrinking rainforests and the impact on children often drawn into slavery to provide cocoa for the production of chocolate.
Having invited everyone to spend 50p on a cake, the boys’ mums jumped into action and whisked up some tasty treats.
Rainforest Concern is a UK-based charity which enables an acre of rainforest to be preserved for a sponsorship of £50.
The boys managed to sell more than 300 cakes and raised an amazing £154.55.
This donation will preserve over three acres of land, which is a highly commendable achievement.
Dominic Floyd, head of Mount Kelly prep, said: ‘It’s an incredible learning journey these young boys have taken. They have learned about the story of chocolate; more importantly they have extracted from within their work the essence of doing good, the confidence to act, to take others with them and know that collectively we can make a difference. I’ve been inspired by them and they are quite rightly proud.’
