Four sixth formers from Mount House School, Thea Dickinson, Charlotte Pickard, Lucy Sharpe and Christian Brown, represented Mount House School in the Salters' Festival of Chemistry, held at Plymouth University's Centre for Chemical Sciences. The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry, an initiative of the Salters' Institute, aims to help promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. They take the form of one-day fun events held at universities throughout the UK and Ireland, in conjunction with the Royal Society of Chemists. The Plymouth event was one of 55 taking place between March and June this year, and was attended by teams from schools across the south west of England. The four Mount House pupils carried out two investigations during the day, using a variety of analytical chemistry techniques. They had to work as a team, and were judged not only on their results, but also on the way they approached the tasks, their knowledge of laboratory safety and good practice, and their understanding of the principles involved. The judges were impressed with the standard of analytical precision evident in the work of the Mount House team, and awarded them second prize in the University Challenge.
