WINKLEIGH Morris dancers were among the attractions at last week's Baring Gould Weekend.

Organised by Wren Music, more than 30 events took place over last weekend, with a capella singer Lester Simpson, concertina player and vocalist Tim Laycock and singer Scott Gardiner among the special guests performing.

The annual conker competition made a welcome return, and revellers at the weekend feast in the Charter Hall on Saturday enjoyed an enticing spread with a hog roast prepared by Devon-based chef Shaun McCahearty, formerly a chef for the Royal household.

The Dartmoor Pixie Band performed a ceilidh in the Church Hall, with all the dances explained to newcomers.

Those who fancied trying their hand at folk music could take part in one of the many workshops going on throughout the event.

The weekend of folk music and events is inspired by the folk song collecting, travel diaries and novels of Sabine Baring-Gould.

He was one of the Victorian era's great social historical researchers, and undertook the first serious and sustained attempt to collect the traditional songs of the English peasants and workers, predominantly in West Devon.
