Steven Hill Memorial Cup

Moretonhampstead 1

Chagford 1

(Moretonhampstead win 5-4 on penalties)

TO the delight of a partisan crowd, Chagford relinquished their hold on the Steven Hill Memorial Cup after a hard fought battle against their local rivals.

The visitors opened brightly and were rewarded with an 18th minute goal.

Andrew Davis was at the end of another well worked move to lob Jason Rees in the Moretonhampstead goal.

Prior to and after the goal, Chagford played some excellent football but were guilty of spurning their opportunities in front of goal, often finding Rees on top form when they broke through a determined defence. Chagfords own back line snuffed out the home forwards so well that Scarry had little to do behind them.

Much of the second half followed a similar pattern but, as Chagford made regular changes, the hosts worked their way back into the contest. Where their defence had been so sound, Chagford started to hesitate somewhat.

With 15 minutes left such hesitation proved costly. Moretonhampstead stole the ball from a Chagford throw-in, setting up Josh Vizor who lobbed Scarry with aplomb.

Knowing the match would go directly to a penalty shoot-out, both teams went for a winner but none was to be found before time ran out.

It was Rees who was to frustrate Chagford in the shoot-out, twice saving superbly. Lee Solly fired home the Moretonhampstead winner leaving their opponents to rue missed chances.
