A TAVISTOCK charity is making a plea for donations of wool so its bank of knitters can get to work this winter.
Every year Operation Sunshine sends out hundreds of little jumpers on container lorries to Africa for orphaned children, many of whom are HIV positive, to keep them warm.
There is no shortage of elderly knitters but any donations of wool would be gratefully received.
Tavistock Library has agreed to be a collection point for donations.
Wool collector Linda Downing said in Buckland Monachorum alone there were at least 20 ladies who knitted for the charity.
Linda said: 'These ladies love to knit like we like watching television and in the last 20 years we have sent in excess of 18,000 jumpers to Africa which is fantastic.
'We are desperate for wool so these ladies can keep up the good work. They also knit the most beautiful blankets and hats which are vitally important because people lose a third of their body heat through their head.'
The next loading will be on December 13, which will be the third trip the charity has organised this year.
