I HAVE often said that Tavistock is the prettiest town in the South West. It was, therefore, good to read that it topped a nationwide survey.
However, I am concerned that Tavistock could be heading towards the same sterile plastic-signed urbanity that has come to characterise so many small towns.
Unimaginative, unfeeling councillors have already spoilt the Meadows with a row of ordinary street lights across the middle, and lumbered us with a sea of grey granite in Bedford Square.
It needs raised flowerbeds, a water feature and a few ornamental trees, with seats set within them. Possibly also a pretty vending stall for light refreshments.
The survey shows Tavistock to be worth such improvements, but don?t hold your breath!
