I TOTALLY disagree with Cllr Terry Pearce's premise that a core strategy allows development to be 'at a quality that enriches the area and provides housing for our families (Letters, December 17).

The core strategy plans for 750 houses and other development off the Callington Road in Tavistock will not only ruin some beautiful, irreplaceable countryside, but also create a vast suburb outside the town and destroy the quality of life of people who live in this area — more roads, more infrastructure, more people, more litter etc. etc.

Subsidised council housing should be for the very needy only, and everybody who can afford to rent or buy should do so like the rest of us.

Many people in Tavistock cherish the beautiful rolling hills and open greenery of our countryside and will be and already are, very sorry to see it built over and our lovely town destroyed and turned into a dormitory suburb for Plymouth.
