THE future of the Old Folks? Rest Room in Tavistock went under the spotlight during a behind-closed doors meeting in the town hall last week.
The town council, which rents the building in Duke Street from Hunstrete Estates for just £5 a year, is trying to renew the lease, which is due to run out next month.
Lawyers from Hunstrete Estates were invited to Tavistock last week, to explain an offer regarding the lease. Councillors met in secret to debate their response.
Town clerk Roger Howard told the Times: ?A decision has been made and our lawyers are at this moment in contact with lawyers of Hunstrete Estates to inform them of this decision and to continue negotiations.?
Col Howard said the councillors? decision was unanimous and logical, and that members had great expectations of a successful outcome.
Once negotiations had been completed, the outcome would be made public, he said.
Last summer it emerged that Hunstrete lawyers were claiming a list of ?dilapidations? at the prime town centre site had invalidated the option to renew the 50-year lease for a further 25 years.
Since then, lawyers for both sides have been trying to come to an arrangement, while the Old Folks? Rest Room committee members and volunteers have put right the work required by the owners.
