AN APPEAL is going out more for stewards to monitor the route of Hatherleigh Carnival in November.
Under instructions from the police, the Carnival Committee needs to have at least one steward per 200 people.
Press officer for the committee Louise Dilling said there were a number of points raised by the police regarding safety at the carnival but these could all be met quite easily.
'Some people were worried that there might not be a carnival but that is not the case,' she said. 'We just need to make sure there is a proper extinguisher point for the hand held torches and constant supervision for the burning of the tar barrels.
'The most important thing is that we get more volunteers — we had 18 stewards last year but with between 3,000 and 4,000 spectators at the event it is not enough.'
Anyone who wants to help should phone carnival committee secretary Mandy Wonnacott on 01837 810678.
The committee is holding a fete on Saturday in The Square at Hatherleigh from 3pm to raise funds for the carnival.
Hatherleigh Silver Band will be playing and stalls, skittles and refreshments will be on offer.
Carnival goers will be pleased to know a candidate has been found for the title of Carnival Queen but her name will not be revealed until a later date.
