A NON-FOOD retail unit could be built on the site of Radmores Garage in Tavistock's Plymouth Road.

A planning application has been received by West Devon Borough Council to use the land for 'non-food retail' use by developers Kingcross Ltd.

Agent John Riches said his clients were interested in the site, subject to planning approval.

He said: 'I am talking to about half a dozen national retailers and some regional ones.

'I think it's fair to say there is not exactly a lot of out-of-town retail activity in Tavistock — there are a lot of people living there who don't really want to drive 15 miles down to Marsh Mills.'

Mr Riches said, until planning consent was granted, there was little he could say about the eventual outcome of the site, but he said 'non-food retail' could be anything from a DIY chainstore to a car-related company like Halfords.

He said, if a deal goes ahead with the developers, a mini-roundabout would be constructed at the junction between Brook Lane and Plymouth Road. The site would be landscaped and allowance made for a cycle path.

But Irene De Quick, of Radmores, said no deal had been signed as yet.

'It's up for sale and we have just got to wait and see when somebody makes us an offer.'

Mrs De Quick said the garage had been on the market for several years and could remain for sale for some time yet.

Chris Watson, principal planning officer at West Devon Borough Council, confirmed the outline application was received 'several weeks ago' and would not be considered by the planning committee before April.

'We will probably be asking for traffic reports from the applicants, so that we can consider access and parking issues,' he said.

Consent was granted for a housing development on the site last year which is still valid.
