VOLUNTEERS armed with hi-viz and speed cameras were positioned to monitor traffic on the moorland roads recently.
Dartmoor Speedwatch volunteers and local PCSO Mark Canvin were undertaking speed checks and training sessions near Merrivale.
The speedwatch scheme was started last year by a group of concerned local residents after numerous incidents of animal deaths on moorland roads.
The volunteers are trained in the operation of a radar speed gun and position themselves in places which have been risk assessed by the police. When they detect drivers who are exceeding the speed limit, the speed and details of the vehicle are recorded and this is fed back to the police at the end of the session.
