A CHALLENGE walk which involved members of Horrabridge and Princetown youth clubs trekking 28 miles across Dartmoor over two days last autumn has won an award for its success.

The 'Crimebeat Award' for the most innovative idea to engage young people was presented to the Horrabridge neighbourhood policing team at Horrabridge Youth Club last week in a ceremony (pictured right) attended by many young people. The award was presented by the High Sheriff of Devon, the Hon Elizabeth d'Erlanger.

Police sergeant Dave Anning said it was great to see so many young people take part in what was for many the biggest thing they had ever done.

'Most of them had not walked across Dartmoor before and the challenge was over two days camping in each other's youth clubs overnight, he said

'One child had a broken arm and one was autistic but they all managed it and there were all sorts of interesting challenges throughout, put on by the likes of the fire brigade and the Dartmoor Rescue Group.

'The kids got so much out of it and it was such a success that we are doing another one this year.'

Sgt Anning said he was grateful to all the adults who were involved and the WI, who provided refreshments at each end.

The neighbourhood policing team consists of PC Dave Pickles, PCSO Rob Walsh and PCSO Mark Canvin.

Youth worker Charlotte Carpenter said the young people were proud of their achievements and the walk enabled them to really feel part of something.

It is hoped at this year's event, again in September, other youth clubs will take part.

A special award was also presented to Horrabridge resident Don Yendle, who was instrumental in building the youth centre in the village and for his involvement in helping young people in the area.
