NEW works by two photographers go on show at the Pickled Walnut restaurant in Okehampton later this month. Following the success of the Pickled Walnut?s autumn exhibition of contemporary art, the restaurant hosts the opening night of its spring exhibition on Tuesday, March 22. The exhibition features the work of landscape photographers Jen Bryant and Matthew Budd. North Devon-based Jen took up photography five years ago and having walked Dartmoor for more than 20 years, she found the two hobbies could not be more compatible. ?I do enjoy colour but really love darkroom work. To see an image gradually appear still seems magical to me,? she said. Jen said Dartmoor was perfect for black and white work as it is full of textures, shapes and a hardness that translates well in mono. Jen has previously exhibited at the Salar Gallery, Hatherleigh, and Chagford Galleries as well as in Babbacombe and Bovey Tracey. Matthew was born in Bristol in 1964 and spent his formative years exploring the surrounding countryside, laying the foundations for his love of nature, light and the outdoors. Family holidays were in a cottage on Dartmoor and it was the fusion of these experiences, whilse growing up in the shadows of the Mendips, which helped develop and inspire the special intuition that now comes through in his photographs. Matthew says: ?Observation is the key. You don?t just look through the viewfinder; it?s looking and looking . . . and then seeing . . . then being amazed . . . and then capturing that feeling for others to see. ?Patience is a major factor too. Some pictures happen quite easily, but most have to be worked for even if it means staying in one place for hours just to get the right light or getting up at 4am. ?For me, photographs are the perfect medium for conveying what is all around us.? Matthew is currently exhibiting at GPT and Splash Galleries in Bath and BA Systems in Bristol. The reception on March 22, runs from 6.30pm to 9pm. The exhibition runs until June.
