A DARTMOOR beauty spot was the target of a large fly-tipping incident last Saturday (May 9) evening.

Three fridge-freezers, kitchen cupboard units and bags of rubbish in Jewson builders’ plastic containers were tipped at the Brisworthy plantation near Sheepstor.

Burrator Parish Council took to social media after discovering the incident and asked for residents with any information to make contact.

In the post, the council stated: ‘Just because the recycling centres are closed for a few more days does not forgive this awful blemish of our Dartmoor landscape’.

A spokesman for Burrator Parish Council told the Times: ‘Fly-tipping will not be tolerated at any level in and around our villages. If you fly-tip in the Burrator area we will post photos of the offence online, seek to have the rubbish examined and track down the offender with our partner agencies with a view to prosecution in the courts.’

A number of fly-tipped fridges had also been reported dumped in hedgerows along the lane from Cadover Bridge to Shaugh Prior and Bickleigh the previous week. As many as eight were reported dumped and have been removed.

West Devon Borough Council were informed of the fly-tipping incident at Brisworthy on Monday morning.

The incident took place on privately owned land and the borough council said it was ‘investigating’.

Cllr Caroline Mott, lead member for environment at West Devon Borough Council, said: ‘Our officers were notified about the fly-tip at Burrator over the bank holiday weekend and are currently investigating.

‘We can only remove fly-tips which are on our land but we will investigate any fly-tips which are reported to us. If you see a fly-tip in West Devon, please let us know online using westdevon.gov.uk/report Please don’t try to clear the fly-tip yourself or collect evidence from it — our officers are specially trained to collect evidence which can be used in the event of a prosecution.’
