RESIDENTS and visitors of Calstock will soon be welcoming a visitor they have not seen in the village for more than 80 years.

The paddle steamer, Monarch, will be making its way from the Isle of Wight to the village this month.

Monarch is reputedly the world's smallest commercially operated vessel of its type and is powered by a steam engine, which passengers can view from the saloon.

The boat normally takes passengers on the River Medina in the Isle of Wight, but will be visiting the area for a private charter.

Skipper Matt O'Crowley said: 'It's wonderful to be bringing a paddle steamer back to Calstock after so many years, albeit temporary.

'I am sure that when everybody hears her steam whistle, they will all make their way to the quay to see what on earth is coming up the river. Monarch might only be small, but she is a wonderful example of paddle boat technology still in operational use.'

A limited number of public sailings have been arranged on Friday May 28 and Saturday May 29. Carrying only 12 passengers, people will have to book early to get a seat on the paddle steamer. To book a seat call the Tamar Valley AONB team on 01822 835030 or email [email protected]">[email protected] with your details.

For anyone unable to secure a seat on the Monarch itself, the Calstock Ferry will operate a sister ship cruise service, which is ideal for photographers wanting the best viewpoint for getting images of the Monarch.

Profits from the cruises will be split between the operating fund and St Catherine's School on the Isle of Wight, which helps children with speech and language difficulties from across the country.
