MORE than 100 young sports people and coaches from West Devon travelled to Exeter University to represent the area at The Devon Games to Inspire 2011.
Blessed for the majority of the event with dry weather and with a large, enthusiastic crowd behind them the West Devon Team earned sixth place finish overall, with Exeter crowned the eventual champions on their home patch.
Against strong opposition the team managed to bring home five medals; the, tennis team, girls badminton team and high-five netball team all picked up bronze medals, the boys volleyball team took home a silver medal each and the extremely successful girls tag rugby team were gold medallists. Here is West Devon team results: boys badminton, 8th; girls badminton, 3rd; girls cricket 7th; gymnastics. 4th; high-five netball, 3rd; boys hockey, 4th; girls hockey, 7th; netball 6th; table tennis, 4th; girls tag rugby, 1st; tennis, 3rd; boys volleyball, 2nd and girls volleyball, 6th.
The whole of Team West Devon demonstrated great sportsmanship and spirit throughout the competition and were duly rewarded with a second place finish to East Devon in the Fair Play award.
This year the West Devon team was coordinated for the first time by OCRA, a local charity which maintains and improves recreational opportunities and facilities in West Devon.
OCRA thank all the team managers who ensured the selection process, training sessions and the event were successful and enjoyable for all the participants.
