I NOTE two out of four councillors reported by you advocate continuing with the present system of council procedures which I believe the modified committee system means.

I am not altogether surprised; after all, change can be uncomfortable. I am glad to hear that in their views the electorate should be satisfied with the current council structure and its practices. In my opinion, and I work with improving organisational structures, the present procedures are completely out of date and in need of a very comprehensive overhaul.

In order that West Devon become a dynamic and effective Council of Excellence, and manage both its services and finances efficiently, I believe modernisation and restructuring is needed.

I have been hesitant in expressing my personal view as an unaligned Independent (only Ted Sherrell and I sit in this position on the borough council).

I would not want to be seen to influence such an important decision that is each householder's right to decide for themselves, irrespective of political bias.

I shall personally be registering a 'yes' vote for West Devon Borough Council to be run in a new way, which includes a mayor who will be elected by the voters of the borough, to be in charge of the council's services and to lead the council and the community which it serves.

Caroline Keane

Tavistock Town and West Devon Borough Councillor
