THERE was no Okehampton Golf Club ladies' section Wednesday competition last week as there was a 36-hole open competition at the club.

However, on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16, the ladies held their club championship. This year it was a 36-hole medal held over two days.

There was also an 18-hole competition held on the Sunday, for ladies unable to play 36 holes.

It was a close fought battle, and although the weather was dry and sunny, conditions must have been tricky as only one lady came in under par.

This was the eventual winner, Mo Huggins, who won the scratch cup and became the ladies' club champion. Two good rounds of 80 and 83, a total of 163, net 139.

The Handicap Cup was won by Amanda Clifford, with 86 and 83, gross 169, net 143.

Scratch second was won by Penny Deakin with 86 and 87, gross 173, net 149. Handicap second was Marcia Holwill with 92 and 88, total 180 net 146.

The 18-hole prize was a close fought battle decided on countback of the last nine holes. Winning with a gross 100, net 73 was Sue Glanville. A close second gross 97, net 73 was Shirley Reddaway.

There were four 2s, Doris Jewell and Shirley Reddaway and two for Sue Glanville.

Congratulations go to the lady captain of the club — on Friday she and five other Okehampton ladies attended the Devon County Veteran Ladies' Golf Association extra centenary meeting at Holsworthy Golf Club.

The lady captain had a wonderful round of golf and with the magnificent score of 40 points took the honours, winning outright over a large field of ladies from all over the county.

On Wednesday the monthly stableford was played by 14 ladies, and only one came in under par; this was Lyn Atkinson, who won outstandingly with a fantastic score of 41 points.

This means an immediate reduction of 3 in her handicap, so now Lyn plays off 27.

In second place was Mary Keir with a very good par score of 36 points. Third was Amanda Clifford with 34. There were two '2's, Mary Keir with one and Amanda Clifford with the other.

On Tuesday July 18 the President's Trophy team played Woodbury Park at Okehampton, the home team getting their revenge for an away loss, by winning emphatically 5 1/2 to 1 1/2, a very good win indeed.

ON Saturday, a beautiful sunny day, 96 competitors took part in the Barns Cup Four Ball Better Ball competition at the club. The course was in superb condition and playing well.

The scores were as follows: David File and Duncan File 48, Christopher Wilkins and Barry Masters 45, Jim Brewer and Harry Hawkin 44, Colin Cornwall and Kevin Cornwall 44.
