IT has been a busy week for the Colts hockey teams at Mount House, who acquitted themselves well in matches against Exeter Cathedral School and in the Devon mini-hockey tournament. Against Exeter Cathedral School, the Mount House Colts A team put on a great show despite having several players unavailable through injury. Their passing and space awareness was excellent. An efficient short-corner play led to one of Harry Sharpe's two goals in a deserved 3-0 victory. Jamie Redfarn and Ralph Lawson combined well and showed some solid defending, while Harry Sharpe captained the side admirably, and made some strong aggressive breaks. The Colts B match was much more evenly contested. The Mount House boys fought hard and incorporated some of the skills they have been developing through the term. Ruairidh Matthews scored the only goal of the game with a well-struck shot following a long period of Mount House pressure. The Devon mini-hockey Tournament was played in dreadful conditions, despite which the Mount House boys put in their best performance of the season. Their first group stage match ended in a 1-0 defeat against Exeter Juniors, but the boys rallied from this disappointment to win the next two games against Eggbuckland (1-0) and Exeter Cathedral School (2-1), to qualify for the quarter finals as joint best runners up in their pool. In their quarter final, Mount House produced a top-class performance to beat Isca School by a goal to nil in extra time. The Mount House side again raised their game in the semi-final against Ashmoor School, winners for the last two years. The score was deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of normal time. This led to a penalty flick contest, and again Mount House held their own to tie 1-1. So it came down to sudden death penalty flicks, which went off for four attempts each before Mount House were finally beaten. l MOUNT House Girls' U13 netball team had an excellent day at the IAPS Regional finals at Port Regis. The team made third place in their group, beating Norman Court on the way, and only losing by the one goal in a seven goal thriller to the eventual winners. The girls played exceptionally well all day, trying many of the moves they had practised in training. Freya Semken showed her best form of the season. The following day the girls played Truro School away, and brought a great deal of confidence with them from their performance at Port Regis. In what was definitely their best match of the season, they dominated the court. Their set plays, centre passes and shooting were all top quality and showed how much their hard work this term has paid off. Charlotte Pickard was nominated by the opposing coach as the outstanding player in the 14-5 victory, but all of the girls must take the credit for a magnificent team performance.
