AT the end of its Summer Tennis League season Yelverton have a mixed set of results to report. Both mens and ladies' teams were able to field a full team for all the fixtures, despite five rained off and re-arranged matches.
The mens' team had some heavy losses through non availability of players and injuries, which means that they were relegated to Division 5. Captain Phil Gasche praised all the squad members for their efforts.
The Ladies A team finished third in division two with 45 points, behind Mannamead A and Ivybridge B. Helen Smith and Karen Gasche were given a league merit award for their determination and consistency as the number one pairing. Angie Lynch, Shirley Every and Gabriella Hattersley also played well to achieve this excellent result.
The ladies B team of Fiona Spreadbury, Liz Parks, Ann Short, Wendy Sharland and Mags Berry played with great determination but against strong opposition were relegated to division four.
The ladies C team narrowly failed to gain promotion from division five as they drew 4-4 in their last match with Saltash - although Yelverton third team were promoted in that league. Jean Humphries, Lynne Macfarlane, Jenny Kay, Fiona Smart, Mary Downey, Hilary Monk, Anne Shaw and Julia Whetton all played their part in a successful season.
The club managed to complete their summer tournament, despite the unhelpful weather conditions. It was a joy to see some of the younger players taking part on finals day. Tom Alway beat Matt Smith in the Boys U18s final but Matt joined up with his Mother Helen to take the mixed doubles against Ann Short and Fiona Spreadbury.
In the ladies doubles final Gabriella Hattersley and Fiona Spreadbury lost to Lynne Macfarlane and Helen Smith 6-1, 2-6, 0-6. However Gabriella did triumph in the ladies singles where she beat Wendy Sharland. In the mens' singles Tom Alway lost to previous winner Simon Murray who won 6-4, 6-3.
Tom had joy though in the mens' doubles where he partnered Ray Spreadbury. They beat Charles Hattersley and Mike Williams in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 thriller. The day was rounded off with the presentation of trophies and refreshements in the clubhouse.
