SEVERAL years ago as a member of the Women's Institute I was involved with Mrs Rhoda Lee's campaign for better prices to be paid to dairy farmers, but now it is time to campaign again. Do you remember the Tennessee Ford song — 'I've got the milk 'em in the morning, feed 'em, milk 'em in the evening blues'? Up in the morning before anyone else is stirring, work all day and then it's milking time again and that is 365 days a year — including Christmas Day, New Year's Day, your wedding anniversary — every day! And nowadays often midday as well in an attempt to get more money. Not an easy job when it makes a profit but for many today the product which costs them 30p to produce is being sold by gleeful supermarkets for 20p — less than people will pay for a bottle of water! Many small local post offices, village shops and farm shops sell milk supplied by independent dairy farmers. By buying our dairy products from them we can be sure that the farmer is being paid a fair amount and if the supermarkets notice a fall in milk sales perhaps they will ask themselves why. Remember it all begins with you! Barbara Weeks Mary Tavy
