GUIDES and Brownies in Tavistock recently received a special thanks from a charity which provides homes for young orphans in wartorn Mozambique.

In a letter to guider and event organiser, town councillor Pat Warne, Hope and Homes for Children said ten homes had now been completed on schedule and within budget.

It was two years ago that Tavistock District Guides raised £850 towards a room in one of the homes through a bazaar in the Pannier Market.

Each home houses 15 children. The youngsters have all lost their parents during the war — many having witnessed their deaths. Instead of being forced to live on the town's municipal dump, surviving by any means possible, they now have caring homes where they can obtain an education and skills.

Charity spokeswoman and director Carole Cook said: 'James Whiting, our co-director, went out at the end of the project in July to see the homes.

'He was enormously impressed both by the standard of the homes' construction, and, even more importantly, by the quality of local staff, and the enormous desire and commitment of the children to grasp this opportunity that you have given them to rebuild their lives.

'We cannot thank you enough for your astonishing generosity and kindness in giving us the opportunity to help these children.'

The Salisbury-based charity enclosed two photographs — one of a plaque on the red door of a home inscribed 'Guide Association Tavistock and District', and the second of several of the homes.

Mrs Warne said: 'I think it's wonderful the charity has shown us the end product.

'It is such a worthwhile charity which is doing good in several places. This sort of need will never end.

'I would like to thank everyone who supported us on that Sunday afternoon.'
