TAVISTOCK?s Meadows will be the setting for a Bank Holiday Bonanza this weekend, organised by the town?s Lions and Rotary clubs. The event is being held in lieu of the annual balloon fiesta and day at the races, which unfortunately was beset by insurance problems and had to be cancelled. Steve Grummitt, spokesman for Tavistock Lions Club, said: ?There?s going to be lots of things going on for the kids and mums and dads ? and hopefully we will raise some money for Crowndale Recreational Association at the same time. ?We had a number of things booked for the balloon fiesta, so we thought we?d go ahead and put on something for the Bank Holiday in the Meadows, thanks to the town council.? The programme of events starts at noon on Saturday August 27. There will be five pantomime horse races and the Battling Giants, Mighty Mick and Terrible Ted, will be fighting for the affections of Big Ethel. These 12ft high giants will be entertaining the crowds at 2pm and 3.30pm. Emazdad the magician will be keeping the youngsters enthralled with his comic brand of magic trickery and the Tamar Valley Westerners will be putting on their western re-enactments during the afternoon. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Soundhouse Brass Band at 3pm and 5pm and at 6pm, there will be a grand duck race, when 1,000 plastic ducks will be let loose in Tavistock Canal. In addition, a charity bazaar will be held, there will be a bouncy castle and a variety of refreshments including ice cream and a licensed bar. Steve said: ?We will be circulating programmes around the area this week, which will have a voucher printed on it ? if people fill them in and post them in a box at the event, they will have a chance of winning a return ticket for two to Jersey from Plymouth, courtesy of Air South West.?
