THE celebrations commemorating the 900th anniversary of the granting of Tavistock?s market charter received a boost last week, when councillors gave the thumbs up to the creation of a mediaeval village in the Meadows. The town?s properties committee gave the go-ahead for the park to be used by a ?touring household? which lives mediaeval-style, during an event which will include all kinds of activities including ?have-a-go? archery lessons. Cllr Caroline Keane said: ?I fully support this, I think it will be an excellent use of the Meadows ? it?s going to be very interesting to see how this progresses.? Cllr Ted Sherrell backed the idea too ? with the stipulation that the Charter Group organising next year?s celebrations kept in close contact with the council?s works superintendent. Cllr Maxine Gibson said: ?We don?t often do something big like this ? I think it?s a great idea.? She added that the Charter Group should contact coach companies in an effort to bring visitors to the town by bus for the event, in an effort to reduce parking problems. Cllr Jenny Metcalf applauded the idea but stipulated the Meadows should be returned to its original state after the event, particularly if the weather was wet during the weekend of the mediaeval fayre. Cllr Iain Andrews, chairman of the Charter Group, said they were ?indebted? to the committee for its support. The decision is due to be ratified by the full council at its meeting next Tuesday. The mediaeval fayre is due to be held during next summer, part of a programme of commemorative events taking place throughout the year.
