CHILDREN in Tavistock are a hop, skip and a jump away from a new play facility, following a fundraising campaign by staff at McDonald?s in Plymouth Road.
The Bishopsmead Play Park Project last week received a cheque for £2,000 to provide swings, slides and safety netting for the play equipment.
Project organiser Tina Hurford met representatives of the restaurant and nursery children accompanied by teachers at the play area to envisage how it will be transformed.
The Bishopsmead Play Park Project, in association with the West Devon environmental committee, is now making preparations to install the play facility. The group of volunteers in Bishopsmead has raised £10,000 of the £30,000 total.
Tina Hurford, project organiser, said: ?The contribution from McDonald?s helps us to carry out our goals and is a wonderful opportunity for us to improve our children?s social environment.
?It?s the kind of community support which really makes the difference to us.
?I would like to personally thank the McDonald?s crew for working so hard over the past year. They have been fabulous.?
McDonald?s pledged their support to the play project at the beginning of the year. Fundraising activities have included prize-winning straws and a guess how many sweets in a jar competition. Shift manager Jefferson Lee raised £250 by sitting in a bath of beans, on the coldest, wettest day in Tavistock this summer.
Chris Lloyd-Graeme, restaurant manager said staff in the restaurant had set themselves a target to raise funds for the Bishopsmead play area.
?Everybody worked as a team, came up with great fundraising ideas and worked really hard.
?We?ve had lots of generous customer support and I would like to thank everyone of them for supporting the cause,? he said.
