TWO mayors signed a letter calling on Tony Blair to demand an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East when they visited Tavistock Peace Action Group?s stall last Saturday. The peace group held its monthly stall in Bedford Square and Tavistock mayor Caroline Keane, and the West Devon mayor Ken Williams accepted invitations to attend as private individuals. Both signed the letter to Mr Blair calling on him to demand an immediate ceasefire in the conflicts between Israel and Lebanon and both were given paper ?peace cranes? ? a Japanese tradition which represents the memory of the people who died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki over 50 years ago. The connection with Japan was said by a spokesperson for the peace group to be appropriate, as Cllr Keane had given a reception for a group of Japanese children and the mayor of Edogawa City of Tokyo recently. ?Mayors for Peace? is a United Nations initiative started by the mayor of Hiroshima in 1982. Its aim is to work internationally to raise consciousness regarding nuclear weapons abolition and to pursue lasting world peace.
