OKEHAMPTON'S newly refurbished pannier market will be officially opened by the mayor of the town Christine Marsh on Saturday.
Traders are pleased with the transformation which has come about through grant funding and commitment to smartening up the Market Hall and boosting trade by Okehampton Town Council and the chamber of trade.
Bids to the Rural Development Agency and South Devon and Dartmoor Leader Two were successful and grant funding of £10,000 was matched by the town council.
The Market Hall is now operating as a pannier market on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
There is a new ceiling, brightly coloured decor, awnings and banners and with hot and cold running water, the stallholders can now sell everything from fresh meat to pins and needles.
Win Willis, who has run the Girl Guides stall for nine years, said since the hall re-opened for business visitors had commented on how nice it looked.
'This could be a real boon for the town,' she said. 'But we need more traders here and that in turn will bring in more shoppers.'
Mrs Marsh said the venue was being advertised in local papers to attract more traders.
'I think the transformation is really great,' she said. 'It just goes to show what you can achieve by working together in partnership.
'This is only the beginning — there are a lot of things we want to improve and change and we hope the Charter Hall will be next in line for a refurbishment.'
