TAVISTOCK Town Council will be 'on the ball' with the ceremonial launch next Monday of goals installed as part of the national Outdoor Basketball Initiative.
The initiative aims to make the sport of basketball available, accessible and free to all members of the community and to provide an alternative, purposeful and healthy activity for young people, making use of currently under-used play areas or disused hard-standing areas.
The town council worked with the English Basketball Association to install five goals in various open spaces —Benson Meadow, Bannawell Street, Courtlands Road, Monksmead and Bishopsmead — and the Basketball Association installed the actual nets and posts earlier this month.
The whole play area strategy of the town council is undertaken with consultation with local residents' groups and enthusiasts from the groups will be at the launch, which will be conducted by Tavistock mayor, Cllr Norma Woodcock, at the Courtlands play area at 11 am on Monday, August 20.
