THEY may be small, but they're simply the best . . .

Young members of Tavistock Athletic Club took on clubs from all over Devon, including major cities — and beat them all.

The victorious young athletes were honoured with a mayoral reception in the town hall this week after the club won the Devon Indoor Sportshall League for the first time in its history.

Beating major clubs like Exeter, Plymouth and North Devon with their purpose-built all-weather tracks, tiny Tavistock won the league by a massive margin of more than 1,000 points.

Mayor Cllr Norma Woodcock said: 'Everyone is very, very proud of your achievement.

'Tavistock Athletic Club is the champion — and that is brilliant!'

And Cllr Woodcock invited every member of the junior team to sign the 'distinguished visitor's book', to mark the club's place in the history of Tavistock.

Representatives of each age group thanked coach Shane Wonnacott and their parents for their part in the team success.

'It has been a unique and very special evening,' they said.
