DON?T forget to buy a duck ? that is the message from the Rotary Club of Okehampton which will be holding its traditional May Fair and Duck Race in the beautiful surroundings of Simmons Park this weekend. The fair will include a bouncy castle, laser clay shooting, target golf, skittles, archery, John Rattenbury?s famed barbecue hot dogs, plant sales, charity stalls and many other attractions. Okehampton town band will entertain visitors throughout the afternoon. The popular fair in the park is enjoyed by young and old alike and takes place this Sunday, May 1. The main event is the duck race down the river ? the first race will be around 2pm. The fair will be opened by mayor of Okehampton Cllr Tony Leech. Rotary Club member Russ Thomas said: ?For the price of a pound ticket, you will have the chance of winning £100. ?The tickets will be on sale before the day, outside the supermarkets, so you do not have to be there to have a chance of winning. Your prize will be delivered. ?Fine weather is usually the order of the day so hopefully the only people to get wet will be the Rotarians acting as duck herds in the river to make sure no duck loses its way and they are all included in the next race.? The money raised by Okehampton Rotary is used for charitable works both locally and abroad. Most recently, the Rotary Club acted as a channel for money raised by other organisations to go to areas most badly affected by the tsunami. The entire tsunami appeal operation was overseen by Rotary International and its local clubs, ensuring aid got where it was most needed. Mr Thomas said the recent appeal had demonstrated the international dimension of Rotary?s work. The race sponsors at the time of going to press are: Bob Gee Team Estate Agents; Peter, Peter and Wright; Peninsula Milk and RWH Horsley and Son, specialist welding engineers. There will be many others on the day to which the Rotary Club is grateful.
