Whitchurch v Yelverton
WHITCHURCH recorded a convincing win over Yelverton in Saturday's match. Having lost the toss, Whitchurch were invited to bat first.
Openers Mark Warwick and Ewen Rae made a confident start, scoring at 5 runs an over until Rae was run out for 10. Warwick went on to score 24, then Roger Whittingham (30) and Neil Folley (42) shared a solid fourth wicket stand of 70.
In the last 10 overs Ian Gray scored a fine 47 not out and was
unlucky not to reach his maiden league half-century when his final shot stopped inches short of the boundary. Whitchurch achieved maximum batting points, finishing with a score of 178 for 6 from their 40 overs.
Yelverton made a disastrous start to their innings, with the early batsmen playing some reckless shots, and were 5 for 5 after 5 overs. Kit Reeve and Steve Woods each took 3 wickets in their opening spell, leaving the later Yelverton batsmen with a mountain to climb.
D Vince (59) and C Shautt (15) batted well to give respectability to the Yelverton innings but they never looked like coming close to the Whitchurch total. Mark Warwick rang the changes using six bowlers in an effort to finish off the Yelverton innings. Reeve took two further wickets in his second spell to finish with figures of 5 for 27 and Steve Woods finished with 3 for 11.
The other Whitchurch wicket taker was Richard Freedman with 1 for 7. However the last Yelverton pair hung on, finishing with 102 for 9.
Whitchurch 19 points, Yelverton 5 points.
