Carlsberg South West Peninsula Premier Division
Tavistock AFC 2
Newton Abbot Spurs 1
THE Lambs produced a really good second half display to notch up their fourth win on the trot, against a spirited Spurs side.
It was evident from the start the Spurs had come to Langsford Park to frustrate the home team by getting everyone behind the ball to defend their goal. Tavistock had nearly all the possession but could not break down the Spurs' defensive wall.
In the 32nd minute, in an isolated breakaway by the visitors, the home defence was left short of numbers and Richard Bentley found himself unmarked at the far post to slot the ball past goalkeeper Andy Meeds.
The goal still divided the teams, even though Tavistock continued to press forward but failed to break down the blanket Spurs' defence.
The Lambs increased the tempo of their passing in the second half and this, along with the tremendous amount of effort put in by the visitors in the first period, began to show.
The home team was now completely dominant throughout and missed several good chances to level the scores.
The equaliser came in the 53rd minute, when defender Matt David rose magnificently to power a header past the visitors' keeper from 12 yards.
The Lambs continued to lay siege on the visitors' goal. Jimmy Steer and Glyn Hobbs both missed good scoring opportunities. Chris Menhennick had a free kick superbly saved by Doyle in the 75th minute.
More goal-scoring opportunities passed by, and just as it was beginning to look as though the visitors were going to hang on, Tavistock scored the winner.
A fierce shot from Andy Bowker could only be parried out by Doyle, but Mike Arscott was on hand to hit the back of the net to give the Lambs the victory they thoroughly deserved.
The Lambs' fine run of form continues and this victory moves them up to fifth place in the table, with games in hand on the teams above them.
• This Saturday the first team visit Saltash United, kick off at 3pm. This will be a tough game against one of the other teams in the frame for honours this season.
The Reserves are at home to St Stephen in the East Cornwall League, kick-off 2.30pm.
