South West Peninsula League Division 1 East
Galmpton 7
Okehampton Argyle 0
ARGYLE struggled to raise a team to fulfil this fixture.
Only seven players with first team experience were available and Peninsula League debuts were made by Calum Ausden, Tom McGratton, Neil Vernon, and Ben Woodhouse in goal. All credit is due to these lads for stepping in to ensure the fixture was played —none of them let the team down on the field.
However, it was a case of one-way traffic and Okehampton only managed two shots on goal throughout the game.
There were brave performances at the back, particularly by Matt Mortimer, but Okehampton were overwhelmed and goals by Kevin Wills (two), Paul Mayer, Kevin Wiltshire, John Dunn, Chris Mitchell and Tye Hawkin sealed a comfortable win for the hosts.
The previous Wednesday, Argyle had made the difficult journey to Totnes for a 6.30pm kick-off. Manager Stuart Cann had to play in goal but otherwise Okehampton were able to field a reasonably strong squad.
Having fallen behind to two soft goals in the first ten minutes, Argyle fought back strongly and dominated the 20-minute period before the interval. They pulled a goal back, when Colin Marshall's powerful header rebounded from the bar and Stuart Entwhistle volleyed home the rebound from the edge of the box.
They would have been level by half-time had it not been for a string of brilliant saves by the home keeper.
It was Totnes who took control in the second half and scored three more without reply to run out comfortable 5–1 winners.
Argyle firsts completed their season last night at Ottery St Mary, but the 2nd XI still have two league fixtures left.
This Saturday, they are away to Exmouth Amateurs and the following Saturday away to Sidbury United, both matches kicking off at 3pm.
