RESPLENDENT in their specially commissioned jerseys, the Shebbear College Old Boys rugby side took to the field at Kelly College to compete against Old Kellians in a charity match to raise money for a young Truro School pupil who tragically broke his neck while playing at Kelly last year in a second XV school fixture.
The squad of 25 Shebbear Old Boys (including the headmaster) got off to a flying start with two quick tries.
Kelly pegged one back and at 19-13 at half time the game was finely poised.
However, with Shebbear captain Mark Priest leading from the front and contributions from the Saltmarsh brothers, Olly Wickett and Neil Giddy in the backline the College raced to a 43-13 lead with ten minutes to go.
Kelly did pull back though, to 43-25 to Shebbear.
Try scorers for Shebbear were Mark Schofield (3), Rob Saltmarsh (2) Harvey Brown and Olly Wickett, with Olly converting 4.
Refreshments and an auction followed, including a signed Wasps shirt from Phil Vickery, and in total about £1800 was raised.
It is now hoped to make this an annual fixture, with the return match at Shebbear College next autumn.
