THE annual Wallkham Valley fund raising match in aid of the West End Reordering Fund for St Mary The Virgin Church Walkhampton recently took place on the memorial field. The home side scored a few desultory singles in the first five overs as Chris Cottrell and young Will Chapman bowled good line and length. Ray Spreadbury fell to Cottrell for 2 runs, bringing Rich Berry to the wicket to resume last season?s successful opening partnership with James Hills. The pair upped the tempo with half a dozen boundaries in a stand of 45 before both were snapped up by Tim Ellis? canny spin, Hills for 21, Berry for 23. Ellis then snared Bill Tynan in the same over, which had yielded only a single run. Roger Smith and Tim Baxter settled for a steady stand of 20. Smith amost fell to a brave attempt in the outfield by Becky Chapman which cost her a shining black eye, before he eventually went for 11, bowled by Paul Adcock. J Berry succumbed to a catch at square leg by Tim Ellis off Nick Shutt. Sandy Ralph then joined the immovable Tim Baxter and they kept the score moving with a succession of boundaries, Baxter retiring unbeaten for 27 good runs. Mark Partington Smith was bowled by Becky Chapman, bringing in Ken Kay. Nick Shutt, Becky Chapman and Chris Cottrell kept the lid on the scoring with some accurate bowling as the hosts managed to post a dubious score of 127 for 7 off 30 overs, with Ralph unbeaten on 20 and Kay not out 3. Ellis 3 for 20, Adcock 1 for 24, Nick Shutt 1 for 7, Becky Chapman 1 for 8 and Cottrell 1 for 10 had bowled the Church into a promising position. That promise looked a little forlorn within 3 overs as Tim Baxter accounted for Paul Adcock for a single, then also had Tim Ellis well caught by Sandy Ralph for 3. Mark Partington Smith disposed of Chris Shutt for 1 when he dislodged his own off bail trying to keep the spinning ball off his stumps. Kevin Baxter and Will Chapman restored the situation with a gritty stand before Baxter was bowled by Roger Smith for 9. Becky Chapman joined her younger brother at the crease and the pair showed good understanding as they manged a double figure stand before Becky was caught by Tim Baxter off John Leal for 7. Ali came and went quickly when she fell to Ken Kay?s slower ball. Will Chapman then featured in another stand, this time with Chris Cottrell who hit three boundaries before retiring on 26. The classy Chapman was eventually prised out for 22 when he gave a catch to Tim Baxter off Bill Tynan. Charles Hattersley started well with a thumping boundary, but the squeeze was then put on as Sandy Ralph, James Hills and Rich Berry tied the batsmen down, aided by alert fielding. Hattersly fell to a cunning top spinner by Rich Berry. The same bowler repeated the dose, removing Alan Baxter in his next over, then had Locock snapped up at short extra cover by his father, which brought Chris Cottrell back to the wicket to partner Nick Shutt, chasing 26 runs. It was not to be, as Cottrell had his off stump removed by Berry?s next ball as he attempted a square cut, stranding the Church Xl on 101, with Nick Shutt not out 1. Rich Berry had 4 for 5, Tim Baxter 2 for 9, Ken Kay 1 for 12, John Leal 1 for 10, Roger Smith 1 for 7, Bill Tynan 1 for 15 and Mark Partington Smith 1 for 10 in a reasonably tight bowling performance by the Valley in what had been a good competitive match. A sum of over £155 was raised for the reordering fund.
