WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report an entry of 336 cattle and 400 sheep at their recent November Fair sale.

Cows and calves sold to £960 for an 8yo South Devon cow with a 5mo South Devon calf at foot from R C Serpell, St Ive. Breeding cows sold to 610 for a 10yo Limousin x from P J and M A Hearn, Whitchurch.

Breeding bulls sold to £1,100 for a 4yo Limousin from A Legassick, Whitchurch.

In the store cattle section prices topped at £972 for a 24mo Aberdeen Angus x steer from B J and L Landick, Sampford Spiney. Heifers sold to £795 for a 22mo Charolais x from Mrs P Heywood, Coryton.

Young cattle (0–14mo) sold to £842 for a 13mo Limousin steer from A P Legassick, Whitchurch. Similar aged heifers topped at £458 for an 11mo South Devon from K J Watson, Postbridge.

Top price per kilo recorded was 206ppk for a bunch of four 7mo South Devon and Limousin x steers from G Abel, Peter Tavy which realised £490.

In the mature cattle section a 6½yo South Devon cow from F J Mudge, Whitchurch, realised £525. Mature steers sold to £472 for 4yo Hereford x from the Searle Bros, Shaugh Prior.

Other notable store cattle prices included £845 for a 16mo Charolais x steer from Mrs P Heyward, Coryton; £808 for an 17mo South Devon steer from J R Tarr, Bere Alston; £790 for a 19mo Welsh Black steer from D H and C Legassick, Sheepstor; £772 for a 19mo South Devon x steer and South Devon x heifer from A J Eggins, Roborough and £755 for a pair of 23mo Belgian Blue x heifers from J Spry & Sons, Yelverton.

In the sheep pens store lambs sold to £60.20 for a pen of Suffolk x mixed lambs from B J and L Landick, Sampford Spiney. Ewes sold to £49 for a pen of Cheviot grazing ewes from the same vendor. Other notable prices were £57.50 for a pen of mixed lambs from E Fox, Mary Tavy and £57 for a pen of Cheviot wether lambs from P J and M A Hearn, Whitchurch.

On Monday November 22 there is the third season's sale of suckled calves, and on Tuesday December 7, the cattle/sheep fair and sale of suckled calves.
