THE Tamar Valley Farmers? Market at Gunnislake on Saturday could be the last ? unless more people support it.
The event takes place every second Saturday of the month under cover at Delaware School, Drakewalls. Organiser Tracy Baker said that when it started last December it was very well attended but, since then, added competition from markets at Callington and Tavistock was threatening its future.
?We are trying our best in the face of adversity. But what we need is local support otherwise we will have to close. People have said they like what we have to offer and we are in a good location.
?There are about 20 stalls and every month we have something different. On Saturday it is a Hallowe?en theme. We have all local crafts and we try to support local charities.?
Mrs Baker said the market was completely self-funded with stall fees paying for the hire of the venue and the advertising.
?We have been quite active in promoting the area. But during the summer we haven?t covered the cost of opening because people drive past us and go to Tavistock for its second Saturday market.?
This Saturday the community bus is available to take people to Delaware School if they are unable to get from the centre of Gunnislake to the market by other means.
