DO not suffer in silence for any longer, is the message from women?s aid groups from across Devon and from the police. The call comes after a silent march through Okehampton on Monday November 26, an event organised as part of Domestic Violence Week. West Devon mayor, Dennis Bater, and West Devon mayoress, Carolyn Langley, led the procession as it made its way from Okehampton Police Station to the Ockment Centre. Christine McKenna, of South Devon Women?s Aid, said: ?Domestic abuse is a crime ? say ?No? to it. ?The march is part of Domestic Violence Awareness Week and this is the first time it has been in Okehampton. ?We are hoping it will raise the profile of domestic violence so victims no longer have to suffer in silence.? The march was accompanied by a police escort to control traffic while it proceeded through Okehampton. Sergeant Mark Hoar of Okehampton Police said: ?We take a very robust stance towards domestic violence and we will take positive action every time. ?We would encourage anyone who is a victim of domestic violence to come forward or anyone to inform us if they suspect they know someone who suffers from domestic violence.? ?They will be given all the appropriate help and support they need.?
