Devon B division
Kingsbridge first XI
v Tavistock first XI
TAVISTOCK made their first trip to Kingsbridge for many years and were first in to bat. Openers, Nick Goodchild and Ian Gray gave Tavistock a solid start with an opening stand of 46. Gray was then joined by newcomer Abs Bygott and the partnership took the score to 92 before he was dismissed.
Unfortunately for Kingsbridge this served only to introduce them to Dave Manning, the first time that they would have encountered him in competitive cricket.
Manning, who has been destroying opposition bowlers all season, took an instant liking to the Kingsbridge attack, mercilessly disposing of delivery after delivery to all parts of the Kingsbridge ground, and racking up a magnificent 137 which included a staggering 11 sixes and 11 fours. With Ian Gray making a solid 63, Tavistock posted an almost unassailable 303 for 9.
Kingsbridge struggled to cope with the pace of Beuran Hendricks early on, and were soon in trouble. Some good fielding by Tavistock also put the pressure on the Kingsbridge batting. However, solid knocks by Willmott, Stacey and Treeby kept the Tavistock bowlers at bay allowing them to close at 210 for 7, and giving Tavistock the lion's share of the points to continue clear at the top of the table.
Devon Senior Cup second round
Tavistock v Alphington
ALPHINGTON were first in to bat on Sunday and on a firm wicket they struggled to cope with Beuran Hendricks' speed.
Wickets fell on a regular basis and the introduction of spin in the form of Sean Cleave and fourteen year old Jamie Stephens, did little to halt the Alphington slide. Codling, Alphington's best batsman, was bowled by Jamie Stephens for 29, and with Sean Cleave taking 4 for 19, the innings subsided to a disappointing 124 all out.
In reply, Josh Stephens and Ian Gray comfortably weathered the Alphington attack. They formed an unbroken 128 opening partnership with Gray making 73 not out, and Stephens 32 not out, giving Tavistock an easy 10 wicket victory.
This means that Tavistock will now play in the quarter final of the Devon Cup with the draw yet to be announced.
The only remaining teams are from higher divisions, so Tavistock can anticipate a tough game in the next round.
Modec Devon League second XI
Tavistock secs v Ivybridge secs
DESPITE the pitch looking like a batsman's paradise Skipper John McGahey asked Ivybridge to bat. The Ivybridge openers set about the Tavistock bowling smashing any loose balls to the boundary. After eight overs Ivybridge had 53 on the board. McGahey had to make a change and first Dave Jeffery had Borrow caught at Cover Point by Matt Mills off his first ball.
Jamie Stephens then had fellow opener Tuckwell caught by Mark Friend at short fine leg for 16. Tavistock then clawed their way back into this game. Dave Jeffery bowled a miserly spell of 2 for 25 off 13 overs. After 23 overs Ivybridge had only added another 35 runs in 15 overs. Jamie Stephens also bowled an excellent spell taking 4 for 27 off 11 overs. Derek Solomon quietly kept accumulating runs scoring a superb 53 and a quick 23 from Warden gave Ivybridge a respectable total of 175. Boast and Warden bowled good opening spells with Warden having Milligan caught behind for 12.
Tavistock now needed a big innings and this came from Simon Gliddon who played a mature inning unluckily falling for 45. He was ably supported by captain John McGahey, who refinding his form dispatched any loose ball to the boundary. He was unlucky not to reach his century when with time running out he tried to hit a six which fell a foot short and went for four leaving him on 99. Despite this, a happy captain saw his team enjoy an eight wicket victory and 19 points in the bag.
• Next week Tavistock seconds play Barnstaple at home.
