A MAN died after a ‘wild camping’ trip to Dartmoor with a friend.

The pair, from Exeter and in their late 40s and early 50s, were sleeping in a tent overnight in Bellever Forest, near Postbridge, when the older man realised his friend was missing.

He went to look for him and found him nearby in a ditch and unconscious.

The friend ran to nearby Bellever Youth Hostel ten minutes away to raise the alarm at 9.30am last Friday.

Staff at the hostel gave the casualty CPR treatment while ambulance crews - in a land vehicle and the helicopter - raced to the scene.

It’s thought the man, aged 47, may have suffered a cardiac arrest.

He and his pal had been camping locally since the previous Saturday.

The collapsed man was flown to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital at Wonford where he was pronounced dead about half-an-hour after arrival.

A police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances - and a file would be prepared for HM Coroner.
